I was listening to the recent This American Life episode on how an organization run by Jeff Canada has taken a new - long position - at solving the cycle of disenfranchised children who grow up to be disenfranchised adults. The organization's aim is to make sure all of the 10000 children in Harlem graduate high school and go to college.  At the center of this mammoth and seemingly complex vision is a very simple concept - parents need to read to their kids every night and especially from age zero to three.

We read to our son Jaisal from time to time. I look at it as more of a form of distraction and thought of it as our focused time with Jaisal.  It seems reading this early, increases a childs language learning ability and is directly related to interpersonal skill development as well as their later success in school.

Jaisal's birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks. My wife and I have been discussing ways to make it the most memorable and special 1st birthday a child can have.  After listening to the story of Jeff Canada's organization, I think the best gift we can give Jaisal would be our renewed commitment to read for him every night.

I am on win 7 - took me under an hour

I am really surprised by how easy the install was. Thought I'll kick
things off in preparation of installing Windows7 over the weekend but
before I knew it I was staring at a sarene fish wallpaper (Windows7
default theme).

It feels real fast (no antivirus or photo editing apps yet). Keep
posting updates as I install more 'stuff'.

Dual boot 64bit Windows 7 on the agenda for the weekend

Going to get the Windows 7 RC installed on one of the partitions over the weekend and then try moving all my photo editing software over.
Once all the programs are go, I'll wash Vista off.  They say installation is a breeze.  Lets see. Hope it doesn't take the whole weekend.
BTW no one tells Roopali.... :)

DICK - Cheney is writing a book

I for one will be all over it. Need to know how in the hell he pulled
it off. Its no surprise that he was running a pseudo presidency. I
admire the checks and balances in America. It seems Chenny was able
to run his own foreign policy for the longest time - HOW?

I feel bad for Bush all the time. I think he got framed and set up my
folks like Chenny and Mr "there are things you know" aka Rumsfeld.

If interested - pick up Hubris.

Think outside the box and get inside the business

Heard "Think outside the box and get inside the business" on a internal call today.  I think it very neatly lays out the mission for any business enabler (read IT, HR, Procurement) organization.  I like it - new mantra for my team.
